Nicknamed ‘Salta la Linda’ or ‘Salta the beautiful’ by locals and tourists alike, the provincial capital has much to offer beyond just being the setting off point for the surrounding countryside. Prior to the Spanish occupation it was an important city in the southernmost reaches of the Inca empire and the city’s museums are home to many important artifacts including some very well-preserved mummies. The colonial architecture is also some of the most attractive in Argentina making for a very pleasant stroll around the city centre, enjoying its dry, sunny climate and excellent bars and restaurants.
South of Salta in the Calchaquíes valleys you will find Cafayate renowned throughout Argentina as the country’s second most important wine centre – famous for its Torrontes white wines as well as full bodied Malbecs, along with the production of some of Argentina’s finest cheeses. This, coupled with the dramatic mountain scenery, makes for an intriguing corner of the northwest to spend a relaxing couple of days.
