Deep in the Colombian interior lies a land of rugged tropical valleys, winding mule tracks leading to waterfalls in the cloud forest, and steep hillsides covered in vibrant green coffee plantations. A favoured retreat for well-heeled Colombians escaping the city, the coffee region remains a relative secret to international travellers, which is all the more reason to go.
Days are spent visiting coffee estates and sampling the local brew with descendants of coffee barons as you take in the view from their hacienda’s terrace, horse riding through the valleys, or take a trip into the hills above the Cocora Valley by Jimmy Jeep, where hummingbirds hover through the wax palms, Colombia’s national tree, and the world’s tallest palm, only found in these valleys.
