Casa Gangotena

This stunning boutique property is located in the heart of Quito’s historical centre on the picturesque Plaza San Francisco. Staying here, you are walking distance from all of the interesting sights of Ecuador’s attractive capital.

The property itself is already a living part of the city’s history – an 18th-century family mansion that was rebuilt in grand style in the 1920s and fully refurbished in recent times to become one of South America’s most luxurious city hotels, now part of the exclusive Relais & Chateaux group. The 31 guest rooms are classic and sophisticated in style, all with different décor and features. Several rooms have original art deco fittings and hand-painted fresco walls. The restaurant offers authentic Ecuadorian “mestiza” cuisine that explores the interplay of contemporary and ancestral cooking techniques, shining a spotlight on the abundant fresh local produce.

Hotel Pros
  • Great location, centrally positioned on San Francisco Square, a short stroll from many of Quito’s best restaurants and museums
  • Every evening, the hotel offers free of charge exclusive “Quito Experiences” that range from chocolate tastings and cooking classes to after-hours tours of a local gallery or informative history lectures.
  • We love the high tea (or cafecito) served in the grand Art Deco conservatory. Be sure to try their aromatic hot chocolate, made to their own secret recipe with organic Ecuadorean cocoa beans.
Hotel Cons
  • This is a small property with a boutique feel. The staff and concierges are incredibly helpful and friendly, but don’t expect facilities like a gym, spa, or swimming pool. That said, in a short stay, you don’t miss it, and the location more than makes up for it.
  • With only 31 rooms the property is often fully booked several months in advance, especially for high season dates.
  • The restaurant is one of the best in Quito and very popular with local foodies. So, even as a guest, it is worth booking a table in advance.
