The only hotel located within the Brazilian national park, the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas has perhaps one of the most exclusive locations in South America. Belmond guests are the only visitors with access to the falls before and after the official nine-to-five park opening hours. Given that Iguaçu is one of South America’s most visited destinations, this is no small advantage. The sensation of standing alone by the falls in the early morning light is simply indescribable, and more than makes up for the early start.
The hotel’s architecture could perhaps best be described as 1960s Bossa Nova meets plantation chic. A baby pink paint job blends effortlessly with Portuguese tiles, vintage botanical art and antique furniture. As you would expect from a five-star Belmond property, the rooms are supremely comfortable, carrying on the colonial vibes with high windows, wooden floors, tropical print cushions and handcrafted wooden furniture.
A large outdoor swimming pool provides the perfect location to relax and soak up the surrounding tropical nature, and for those looking to decompress even further, the spa offers an extensive range of massages and treatments. Besides taking a taxi into town, in house dining is your only option here, but fortunately the two hotel restaurants are the best in the region. The more casual Ipê Grill offers a traditional Brazilian barbecue experience as well as an extensive, and daily changing, fresh buffet, that kept even our most demanding vegetarian researchers happy. Itaipu is a more formal, fine dining affair serving creative international cuisine with the falls in the background.
